Crossings and on foot
Using their ingenuity, the Romans built oval-shaped stones across the cobbled streets for them to use as crossing. The Pompeian’s would use these crossings in bad weather conditions and/or if there was a chance of getting their attire or themselves dirtied. The amount of stones needed in the crossing would vary, depending on the width of the street. There is always just enough space in between the stones to let the horse and cart's wheels slide through easily.
On either sides of the street, there were sidewalks, raised above street level for the same purpose. Sometimes the quality of the street changed, depending on whose house you just walked past.

Donkeys and Horses
Ancient Pompeian's also used to ride donkeys and horses to get around. This type of travel was generally reserved for long journeys and/or wealthy citizens.
When the people finished riding your donkey and arrived at your destination, there were holes in some parts of the sidewalk where they could tie up their donkeys for safe keeping.

Horse and Cart
Horse and cart were also a popular form of transport. You can still see the grooves on the cobbled streets. Commonly, in the middle of a road up coming to a popular public destination - such as, the amphitheatre, smaller theatre and public stables and gardens - there is a hump in the middle of the road, signifying that no type of transport can come down this path other than by walking.
